Days Like This

I stayed in the valley at Andrew's on Friday, playing guitars well into the evening. After a fantastic, mid-day breakfast, I headed back into town and came across several roadkills from the previous evening's gauntlet, each with it's own 'carrion contingency'. Being so close to the road, the pictures are all of birds distancing themselves from me, but many turned out really cool. Once again, Golden Eagles are really, really big...up to a 78-inch wingspan. These shots go out to JuneBug.

Later, after poking around town for a bit, Jay and I headed out toward the Crazies and discovered yet another new, amazing road filled with equally amazing shots. We were a few minutes off on timing, but not too bad...still enough to get some shots of great color. That road, though, it's one that'll be back in our little posting world again. It's funny how amazing sights are always just around a corner you didn't even know was there.

Brunch

Thursday, January 19, 2005

I miss seeing hawks and eagles on a daily basis. Here on the Right Coast (NOT referring to my politics), we see the occasional hawk cruising the thermals, but it's nothing like Paradise Valley and our home territory in Pray. Today, as if in answer to my wishes, this hawk nailed an unsuspecting pigeon in mid-air, dropped it on the lawn next to the Newport Art Museum, and waited in a tree for me to park my car. Curiously enough, I was on my way to a photography class at the museum. Eventually, the hawk dropped from its high branch and stalked its kill, and with what looked like defiance, stood atop that pigeon. The pictures aren't the clearest, but I was caught a bit off-guard.

Randomonium

I've not had the chance to photograph much lately, but here are a few casual people and pool shots. Until we get some snow around here, it's a bit bland outside...and Marj is right, this wind has been just a little too insane - 80 mph is no exaggeration. I can't wait until this spring and summer with all the area photo trips I have planned; I've got the bug. Hopefully there's a roadtrip to Austin, TX or the deserts of Utah in the not-so-distant future, or a loop through both!

Dreaming of summer.....

I love winter. I really do. But with 80 mph gusts and no snow, I can't help it.
Summer rocks! Here's some shots from last summer...

OLD TIME HOCKEY

Each year…from December to March, there is a group of folks who meet each Saturday and Sunday at Cutler Lake to play hockey. Over the years, these hockey fanatics have developed an exceptional system for the upkeep of the rink surface. This includes a poor man's Zamboni, a pump that takes water from the lake to a T shaped fire hose with small holes punched in it to drag up and down the rink. It includes people going out on the ice with putty knives and squee-gees and buckets of water to patch any deep cracks. It includes a rigorous shoveling routine(shown in photos} before, at halftime, and after each game. It includes a completely open door to all skill levels, and an implied and honored no contact rule, a rescue rope, an annual bar-b-que, and as many dogs as there are players… minus one.
