Christmas Day Coyote

Hope everyone had a wonderful Christmas and with the New Year just around the corner, remember, designate a driver.

I of course spent Christmas day once again down in Yellowstone National Park, such a glorious place to share the magic of Christmas. Saw many animals while there, two wolf packs, many hundreds of elk and buffalo, eagles, waterfowl and coyote, including this nice looking yote just posing for the camera.

You may have noticed the Livingston Photo Society blog is looking a little different. Kind of figured it was time for a face lift and closet cleaning. Stay tuned, more to come.

New Project

Another project in the works. This time its a lens. I started out with a P.O.S. Nikon 28-80mm, seemingly all plastic, junky, kit lens, that would not auto focus (although manual operation seemed to function). These lenses are about 40 bucks on the used market. First step was to disassemble it to get at the glass lenses. There were 3 lenses that seemed to be the correct size for what I needed. Now, I am NOT a lens designer so I had no idea if any of them would work. Trial and error, mounting them one at a time on the lens board, none of the individual lenses worked, save for one that was more or less super wide and would focus at about 6 inches. Next I started to combine the lenses. And that brings us to here. In the photo I have two lenses separated by a small piece of plastic pill bottle, all held together by Gorilla Tape. By my very rough calculations, I have a 170mm F5.4 lens that will cover the 4x5 format. This is not going to be some super duper ultra sharp lens. It will have a very soft focus, so I am thinking best used for portraits. Next step, hopefully this week or next, take some pictures with it and see how they come out. Stay tuned

Ansel Adams in Missoula

The Missoula Art Museum is having an exhibit of Ansel Adams photographs starting on October 7th. I plan on going sometime?? If anybody else from the Livingston area was interested in going, maybe we could setup some sort of carpool to split the cost of gas and save everyone some money.

Did some camping and climbing last weekend. Me and Robert hiked to Blue lake in the Crazies, spent the night, than attacked Crazy Peak on Sunday. Here is a little photo essay.

The obligatory "Here is where we camped picture" On the south shore of Blue Lake.

After leaving camp in the morning we quickly gain about 1000 feet to get us at the bottom of this north face that leads us up to the west ridge. The red lines show our approximate route. The right side going up and the left side coming down.

After gaining about another 1000 vertical feet we arrive on the west ridge.

Robert approaching the False Summit. Here it starts to get a little tricky. The red line shows part of the route to the summit.

Once on the false summit, you must climb down this chute. I've read it is about 70 feet high, its steep, and its got a bunch of loose rock in it.....how fun!

So here is a view looking down the chute. Once down, you then have to maneuver around this spire between the false summit and the true summit.

After you are around the spire, you gain a little elevation and look for one last chute to climb.

What a great weekend and a great climb. I must say I was a bit worried after getting to the false summit and looking down that chute, looked pretty sketchy to me. But after climbing it down and back, it wasn't really THAT bad. Just take your time and be careful if you go. Actually I thought the worst part was climbing back down the north face from the west ridge. Just a bunch of shitty loose talus most of the way down. Not really setting and land speed records, about 3000 vertical feet and maybe 3 miles, it took us about 7 hours round trip from camp. Then another 2 hours to hike back to the car. Needless to say, pretty tired that night. Looking forward to my next adventure.

Spent Labor Day paddling down in Yellowstone with some friends. We paddled from Lewis Lake to Shoshone Lake, our camps site was 8Q4

The paddle was about 7 miles and took us approximately 4 hours or so. We got a little bit of a late start and didn't get on the water till about 13:00 hours. luckily the wind didn't get too bad, although I was a smidge worried when we hit Shoshone Lake but it turned out to be not so bad. I must say, quite the awesome way to explore a small part of Yellowstone. Here are some photos of the trip.

Sitting at home deciding what to do today, I get a call from a friend asking if I want to fish the Yellowstone. I would almost be a fool to turn down fishing the Yellowstone with two professional fishing guides, so I went. We all caught fish, this was my best of the day, a 17.5 inch Brown.

So here is a shot of some fireworks from the 4th of July. I used my homemade 4x5 camera (see below). Shot in B&W but added a duotone in Photoshop. Somehow fireworks in B&W just aren't the same as in color. Sill though, the camera seems to be working as planned.

Thompson Lake

Hiked up to Thompson Lake on Saturday with some friends. Trail was in great shape, a little wet and muddy after the creek crossing but not bad. Tons of people up there. Fishing was good but not great, it was very windy out. This little Cut was fooled by the Hares Ear Nymph.

Finally got around to taking a photo with the homemade camera (see below). This was shot at f22. The back of the couch is about 3.5 feet away from the lens. Looks like everything else is acceptably sharp. Next step is maybe some nice landscape photo.

Went to the Wilsall Rodeo last weekend. But instead of taking the Nikon, I decided to bring the large format camera. I think I managed about 16 photos. Of course if you were there on Saturday, the whole thing was only about an hour and a half long. Still working on developing the film but here is one that is done. Used the Horseman 4x5, Fuji 450mm lens, Ilford HP5+ rated at ISO 1600. Lens wide open (f12) at about 1/125 th second.

Pine Creek Lake

Made the hike up to Pine Creek Lake yesterday. As you can see still plenty of snow up there. Started running into snow about half way between trail head and lake. The creek was raging, made the crossing above falls interesting especially with 3 dogs.

Finished the camera today........except........... I got a little light leak at the lens board. Shouldn't be a big deal to take care of. Turned out pretty good I think considering the tools I had to work with. Four coats of TruOil on the wood. Once I get my light leak taken care of I'll snap a few photos.

The End is Near

Got my lens board all made and painted. Now I am just doing a final adjustment of the fixed focus. Right now it focuses at about 5' 9" . At f32 everything from about 2.5 feet to infinity should be in acceptable focus. I've got some film thawing and when its ready I will try a couple of test sheets and see how it all looks.

I got my inside painted black. You can also see some patch work from my little mishap.

Here we have a shot of the front with hole for lens and the lens board I made. 1/16" steel from the home depot. 1 3/8" hole for the copal 0 hole. Turned out a bit bigger than standard but it works just fine.

And here is the lens board getting some paint. Another coat or two and that will be done.

Next I need to work on the length of my box to get my focus point where I want it. Looks like right now I need to shorten it a bit. After that, finish the outside and secure the connecting frame. Shouldn't be much longer now.

Moving forward after the little set back the other day. Had to change my plans slightly but its coming together. A little more sanding and maybe drill the hole for the lens tomorrow. Secure the back to the body, along with the lens, and then just finish the outside. Hopefully not too much longer now.

I got my centers all cut out and everything was going fine. I started drilling holes for the attachment of the connecting frame..........And then it happened. CRACK!!! I even drilled smaller pilot holes trying to avoid this. I guess I will see how well my glue works. Next time "simpler is better"

Making a new camera

I have some extra parts laying around so I have decided to make a Large format (4x5) superwide point and shoot camera. I picked up some wood from the Home Depot, a 7.25" x 36"x .5" board of Poplar. I cut the board into 5 pieces, 7 inches by 7.25 inches. Next I had to make a jig in the sheet of plywood so I could route out the back board to accept the connecting frame.

After the in-letting was done, I cut out the center of the board.

Tomorrow I will cut out the center of the middle 3 boards and then glue them all together. The front board will of course hold the lens. I also have to figure out how to attach the connecting frame to the wood so it doesn't fall off.

Went to Bannack State Park last weekend. Here are some photos from the day. Pretty cool place, this was my second time there. Hotel Meade is my favorite I think. And in case you photographers wanted to know, I was told by the nice Park Ranger, Tom I think it was, that if you intend to sell any photos from the park ( or any state park in Montana) you BEST have the proper Commercial Use Permit........ PERIOD!!!!! $50 bucks a calendar year...FYI

Joe Buissink Photo workshops in Montana.

Greetings photo friends, I just wanted to take a minute to tell you about two workshops that I am producing that will be taught by Joe Buissink in September. I know a lot of you are not people photographers; but if you are, this might interest you.

I attended a workshop with Joe about two years ago in Canada and it was an eye opening, mind opening experience.

I have been putting my attention on the September workshops with Joe Buissink, right here in Montana. The dates are nailed down, the venue is set and the website is up and running. I chatted with Joe last night and he'll be passing the word at WPPI next week and putting it up on his site, facebook, and etc. Please note that I offered a workshop only option, for my local friends that want to attend one of the workshops and stay locally with friends to save $. But of course, I highly recommend staying with us at the Double T River Ranch for the evenings of great dinners, shooting, sharing and socializing! It will be a great way to end a busy summer of weddings.

For those that might be interested in our "Gift Wedding" project, yesterday we announced the three runner's up for The Gift Worth Giving and the winner will be announced on March !st.

Spent the afternoon in my darkroom (bathroom with no lights on) today developing film. This photo was done with the 4x5 under natural window light and a 32 minute exposure. I didn't get around to any printing today, this was just a scan of the negative.

Being pursued relentlessly by a 55 pound German Wirehair Pointer, the Jackrabbit flees past me escaping with his life. In the 4 or 5 seconds the entire sequence took, this is the best photo of the lot. Its a little soft, but as most of you know, manual focus, super telephoto lens, and a speeding bunny make for a difficult situation.

With such nice weather we have been having I decided to take a hike today. Went to Sunlight Lake in the Crazies. I have been wanting to come here for sometime now and I am glad I finally made it. The hike in was good, about 4 miles to the lake. I am guessing but it probably gains about 2500 to 3000ft before dropping down to the lake. The trail is well worn and not very rocky until you get above the trees. But even then its pretty easy going. HOWEVER..... I am sure when the trail was made they had not heard of switchbacks??? Would have been nice in a couple of spots. Saw about 20 Mountain Goats while I was there too. Will definitely be on my "MUST CAMP THERE SOMETIME" list.

Just got back from a little overnighter at Pear Lake in the Crazies. Kind of a bugger to get to, pretty sure there is no trail to the lake. At least I didn't find one. Lots of steep, loose, talus to contend with made even more enjoyable by the intermittent rain on the hike in. Bout the time I got the tent set up and ate dinner rain had pretty much set in for the night. In the tent at 8pm didn't leave the tent till 7 the next morning, I woke to find a wonderful dusting of snow had fallen. The wind had howled all night long ( think Livingston winds on steroids) and I was thankful for the shelter of the little pines that I could nestle my tent into. Still very windy and cold in the morning, I never even took my fly rod out of the case. Till we meet again.

My legs are still hurting

On 8-3-10 I climbed Emigrant Peak. As the title says, my legs are still hurting. Emigrant peak stands at 10921 feet above sea level. The climb from Gold Prize Creek trail-head up the north west ridge is 4687 vertical feet over about 3 miles. My guide book says 6 miles each way, but I don't believe that is correct. Though not a technical climb, there were a few areas of moderate exposure, and one would surely not want to trip and start tumbling down the side of the mountain. It is a rather steep climb with just a faint hint of a trail on the upper slopes. Coming down sucked worse than going up!!! All and all a great climb which I would highly (get it.. highly) recommend. Trip time for me was 6.5 hours round trip.

Trip east to Jersey Shore

The end of June I went out east to the Jersey shore to visit family. Used to go every summer as a child but it has been some time since I have been there. Totally out of my element at the beach but it was nice to get back and see all of my family. Here we have some photos of the ocean at Normandy Beach, along with the nearby shore house, freshly trapped Blue Crab which made for a wonderful meal, and the Boardwalk of Seaside Heights.

I guess for such a small town, a new park/soccer field is a big deal. So they just happen to be building such a thing almost right across from my house. Well, something was going on there tonight, photos or something?? But it seems to have brought out the " NOT SO SMART THINGS TO DO " in people. You will notice that the silver car is parked in front of my driveway, that's real cool! Now, I have a big wide driveway, but still....... Also notice where the little red car is parked??? Makes you wonder. Makes ME wonder anyway! Can't wait to see what happens once the field is open.

Traditional Black and White

Looks like LPS is feeling a little neglected. I can't even remember the last time I personally posted anything. So, to jumpstart this blog, and to end this year and hopefully kick off 2010 with a bang, here is my contribution.

As many (some) of you know, almost all of my landscape photography is done with large format view cameras. 4x5 to be exact. I have been involved with this format for about 13 years. Up until September of 08 I was only using color film. Then, when cost of processing nearly doubled overnight and quality got worse, I decided to try my hand at traditional black and white. I took over the spare bathroom in my house and now use that for a darkroom. I don't have an enlarger so I only do contact prints. I'm pretty well set, but would like more room. Someday perhaps.

So its been about 15 months now and I have developed and printed about 15 sheets. To say its going slow is gross understatement. But, I most definitely prefer the hands on and control of doing it myself.

That brings us to the picture. Lower Falls, in Yellowstone of course. Photo shot this past spring. My favorite of the 15 or so pictures. This photo is a scan (yuck! digital!)... of the 4x5 contact print.

Thoughts or comments?

(standard disclaimer..My scanner is about 10 years old and it sucks...I hate it, but it's what I have, and the photo looks better in person).

Hey there all. Glad to see many are still active and making posts. It's been a busy summer for us all. I have tons of new shots from the summer, but thought I'd jump in with some relevant images for the season. Got out again at sunrise today...nearly froze my hands off shooting from one of my favorite vantage points...wind chill must have been -20. Seriously took a half hour to get my hands back to semi normal state once I go back nto the rig...guess its time to find the goves:-) I then moseyed down into the valley for a few select fall shots I have been contemplating.

Anyway here's a couple shots of a fairly recognable subject just south of town. Shot many, many, but here's a couple for now. Hope u like.

These swans reside in the lagoon behind my grandparents house in Livingston. They are not to be messed with. They had a sharp eye on me this time, and wanted to keep me within a close range. They are especially territorial while nesting this time of year. The neighborhood moose and young moose were out in the lagoon at the same time.

Former Palaces of Saddam in Kurdistan -The Norh-Region

Sorry for my grammer mistakes on my previous post title...It is Shooting Adventures, but it was a nice chance to show you another subject!

During the role of Saddam in Iraq, he built too many Palaces for his family! specially in the northern part or Kurdisatn.

Here two of his remains of palaces over the top of Bamarny Mountain -2020 Mt high- in Duhok governorate, this place was full with mines so we did not go closser, but the other one is near Bamarney plain on a wonderful location infront of Mount Gara.

All these palces of Kurdistan are attacked by angry peoples during the 1st Rising of 1991.

Well, as you know, life is not all about sunny bluebird days with ribbons and bouquets. There is the substance of life and love in every place and every experience. And I think it's important to share the fact that I shoot all sorts of interesting projects. I always have fun working with great folks and discovering all facets of life.

In my last life (in LA) I shot advertising for about 10 years. It seems to keep coming back around. This time I ventured off to Great Falls for a week and shot for the Benefis Hospital. They're in the process of completing a brand new wing of their hospital.

I nabbed my fab business partner and friend, Lauren Brown to assist me for a week. And here are a few snaps.

Here are some grabs from an Ad shoot we did with a fine guy up in Conrad that had his back fixed. Now he's out in the field again, keeping the American black gold going into the reserve.

Oh and last but not least Lauren and I took a picture of ourselves in front of El Comedor. Great food and.... the largest selection of Tequila in the state. 50 different brands!!! That's why Lauren is smiling and I'm looking quizzically into the lens of my own camera. ha ha ha

Well, I have been fortunate to find you all here in cyberspace and I am grateful that you have developed this forum to share our love of the photographic medium of expression. I am equally grateful that I live in our beautiful town of Livingston. I actually grew up here and after being gone for a few years, have found myself squarely planted back in the footprints of my roots, although slightly larger now. Anyway, I have been trying to figure out how I was going to begin to share the things i do with a camera with you and in my conundrum of sorting through thousands of possible emotions and wild expressions in my graphical file folder of the minds eye, I became quite sure that I couln't come up with one other thing than the most recent work I have completed. So, in an effort to introduce myself as a graphic artist and also to give a slight nudge to the amazing musical talents of my brother; I have provided the following. I hope you enjoy and i pray that no-one is offended by the potentially extreme graphical nature of this image. I will disclose that no photographers or photographic equipment was harmed in the making of this image. :-)

Lake Placid

Here are a few shots from my recent pilgramage to play hockey in the Olympic Arena in Lake Placid, NY. It's such a great town....still thriving, almost 30 years after the Olympics. The ski jumps are just outside of town, as well as the Biathalon course, Luge, Bobsled etc. There are still people from all over the world competing there throughout the season.

The Bobsled is open to the public. My brother did it, and he said that he felt his body being left behind and he will never do it again. He was terrified. Still is.

Well, some say that Jessie Wilcox has turned the local hospital food system on it's head.

The local magazine Edible Bozeman is running the story and I got to shoot with this happy and energetic Chef Jessie at the Livingston Hospital one morning while she was preparing lunch. Jessie is buying local meat and produce which costs less than the typical institutional food that hospitals commonly serve. The cool thing is that it required a few more jobs to be created in the kitchen, supports our ranches and growers, it's fresher, makes delicious more nutritious food. All this and it doesn't cost them a cent more. Brilliant!

Locals have found out about the very reasonable... delicious meals at the hospital and a number of folks walk in for breakfast and lunch every day of the week.

Anyone who will do a hand stand on a food prep table in a hospital kitchen is HUGE in my book! Thanks Jessie, you're delightful.
